Open-E, Starline and CKNS light up radiology

Seven in one sweep

Radiological, nuclear medical and radiotherapy treatments and examinations require a huge, stable and high-performance storage system. Sounds very demanding at first, but for the dynamic trio consisting of Open-E, Starline and CKNS it was a regular team project with the usual superior handling.

The BoRad group practice with a total of seven locations - distributed in and around the Ruhr region - ran out of steam after five years with the highly available storage backend based on Open-E DSS V7. After all, the ever-increasing requirements were not to be taken lightly:

Long-term storage of CT/MR images (PACS data) over 10 years
Obligation to archive treatment plans for 30 years
VoIP system with 200 microphone units
Docked databases with online appointment allocation
Synchronisation with the hospital information system (HIS)

This not only put a strain on the Citrix Xen servers used, but also on the shared storage system in the data centre in Oberhausen. For planner Yannick Dicke from CKNS-Dienstleistungen GmbH, this was a clear case for a repeat of past success stories.

After all, he was already a regular customer of Starline. One phone call later, he brought the specialists from the Enterprise Storage Solutions Team on board and discussed the increased requirements with them.

Extended requirements

In addition to the aspects mentioned above, the high-availability system should be easy to administer, be able to supply all virtual workstations (VDI) and synchronise in real time with the data centre in Oberhausen.

As a secondary condition, the clients asked - due to an unclear legal situation within the DSGVO - to play it safe and set up the system without a cloud. Last but not least, an Onsite Service Next-Business-Day had to be initiated to ensure that the storages are reliably looked after in the event of a fault.

Said - done

A few planning days and concept discussions later, the team's proposal was on the table: an active/active SMB HA cluster over Ethernet with Open-E JovianDSS. This cluster would consist of two NASdeluxe systems of the Z series (Z for ZFS) in a 10 Gbit/s 4-way mirror with around 50 TB net capacity each.

The service for the hardware will in future be provided by Starline Computer GmbH: an expert will therefore be on site on the next business day to take care of any problems. Meanwhile, Open-E itself is ready to support the HA storage operating system JovianDSS.

After the smooth move to the new HA cluster, all the networkers agreed: the initial set-up of the storage by Starline went smoothly, the virtualisation of the workstations also works smoothly with VMware in regular operation and the response times in the network are terrifically low at less than one millisecond.

From this point of view, a storage happy ending for the 16 doctors and the staff from the group practice - but above all for their patients.
