Wittich Medien KG has publishing houses in almost every state in Germany and in Austria. As an independent, future-oriented publisher, Wittich is proud of its modern publishing and printing equipment and its qualified staff. In 2015, the hardware was therefore also to be brought up to date. Attending a workshop on server virtualization at Starline therefore brought the decision: Wittich Medien KG wanted to break away from its previous provider and set up its own data center. The requirements were:

  • A cost-efficient virtualization platform
  • Highly available storage
  • Tiering of VMs on SSDs and hard disks

After the decision-making process in the workshop, Starline's Enterprise Storage Solutions business unit put together a suitable solution. Wittich now uses two Zealbox servers with VMware vSphere 6, which are specially designed for operation with Windows Server and VMware vSphere.

The great advantage of the solution developed by Starline is the consolidation of the servers. As a result, the new server resources are used as efficiently as possible: The flexibility and scalability of IT at Wittich was increased by virtualization with VMware. At the same time, virtualization with VMware enables significant cost savings.

Fail-safety in the new Wittich data center is ensured by an HA server solution from Starline. This is based on two scalable NASdeluxe storage systems. For Wittich, Starline set up an Active Active iSCSI/NFS failover cluster with synchronous mirroring based on Open-E DSS V7. This not only increases reliability, but also doubles the performance of the storage system.
