Save the data

- or how to successfully celebrate World Backup Day

On 31 March is Word Backup Day

How safe do you consider yourself to be? Basically: data security is not unsexy, boring or unimportant. Anyone who has ever lost their virtual and hard-earned data treasure can tell you a thing or two about it.

After all, photos, texts, tables or measured values represent produced company assets that may be gone forever. Quite a few insolvencies have already resulted from such mishaps - be it from ransomware, viruses or worms.

Our mantra: 3-2-1

If you follow these recommendations, your data will be preserved. (Of course, this procedure does not exempt you from setting up protective measures for your network).

You should

  • 3 versions of all your company's data in total,
  • 2 copies of it on different storage media,
  • 1 backup on storage media outside the company's headquarters, if necessary offline.

Separate where possible

Do not use the same operating system for the backup server as that of your productive environment. In addition, it should not be created within the Active Directory domain.

Make sure that the access data you need for your backups is managed by your backup software. This way you avoid inconsistencies in case the underlying operating system has been compromised.

Media breaks can also be useful

The media disruption hated by digitalisation enthusiasts is always welcome to security fans. After all, it prevents malware from digging deeper into the data.

Keyword Air Gap or Airwall: It is very useful to create a second offsite replication of the backup, which remains separated from the security regulations of the LAN. This ensures that no data is lost after a takeover of the local network.

For this purpose, there are technical possibilities everywhere that limit the coupling of the systems to an absolute minimum in terms of time and thus make an attack on the replication side more difficult.

Protect your backups as well

Should a ransomware attack actually succeed, it is helpful to immunise data that has already been backed up. This means: Immutable storage, WORM and/or tape guarantee that your data cannot be changed afterwards.

Disaster Recovery Simulation

Even a good backup is of no use if no one knows how to restore it. Therefore, those responsible should simulate a test run so that a possible disaster - should it occur - can be quickly remedied. Ideally, the process should be documented down to the smallest detail so that representatives can also carry out the procedure.
