With the new 9400 series, Micron has set a benchmark that even astonishes the NVMe SSD faction. The new front-runner on the PCIe Gen4 bus not only delivers a whopping 7 gigabytes per second in reading, but also in writing. In addition, there is an extraordinarily high input/output performance in random reading of up to 1.6 million IOPS.

Even in the maximum size, the new family members beat the largest HDDs by a long way in terms of capacity. After all, the top model offers a total capacity of an incredible 30.72 terabytes (25.60 TB 9400 MAX). Even with the smaller variants, which come with 7.68 TB and 15.36 TB (6.40 TB and 12.80 TB for 9400 MAX), Micron achieves that data centre operators save a lot of space, weight and budget through rack consolidation.

With one Drive Write per Day (DWPD) in the 9400 PRO and three DWPD for the 9400 MAX series, the engineers also make industry-standard usage loads possible, which will generally last until the end of the warranty period of five years.

At the same time, the SSDs even go one better in terms of energy saving, as the developers have once again succeeded in increasing the efficiency of the hard disk drives. The 9400 series is said to achieve up to 77% more IOPS/Watt compared to the previous generation.

The Micron models remain true to the classic form only in their design: with a height of 15 millimetres, the U.2/U.3 models can be installed in the vast majority of storage servers and NAS systems.
