TrueNAS SCALE 23.10 (Cobia Beta Version) from August 21, 2023

The beta version of TrueNAS SCALE 23.10, also called Cobia BETA, was launched today. Each updated version of SCALE brings further optimizations. Among them improvements to the "apps" as well as upscaling. Cobia is expected to be released in Q4.

Important new features:

  • Bluefin (22.12) has been very successful, reaching 70,000 systems in 18 months.
  • Cobia (23.10) follows Bluefin (22.12) and enables the transition of TrueNAS 13.0 HA systems. Final production is expected in Q4.
  • TrueNAS Enterprise devices are based on either TrueNAS 13.0 or Bluefin (22.12). Cobia (23.10) will be added after its official release in Q4.

New features in TrueNAS SCALE Cobia:

  • Many technical updates and improvements, including OpenZFS 2.2, Linux Kernel 6.1, NVIDIA driver updates, and improved user interfaces for apps and storage.
  • In total, over 1,000 fixes and improvements from Bluefin to Cobia.

More information:

  • Cobia uses the Linux kernel 6.1 with LTS.
  • Following the release of Cobia, TrueNAS CORE 13.1 is expected to be available in 2024.
  • The current version is TrueNAS SCALE 22.12.3.3, but a 22.12.4 release is expected in September.

TrueNAS provides the ability to automatically migrate storage services and VMs from CORE to SCALE. Plugins and prisons can be manually replaced with apps.

TrueNAS SCALE Bluefin 22.12.3 as of 13th June 2023:

  • TrueNAS SCALE 22.12.3 introduces official support for SMB Multichannel. SMB Multichannel enables the use of more bandwidth by aggregating multiple LAN interfaces. After upgrading to 22.12.3, SMB Multichannel can be enabled in the SMB Service Screen menu.
  • The update includes numerous enhancements and bug fixes, including app reliability improvements, a Samba update (from 4.17.5 to 4.17.8) and changes to the NVDIMM firmware to reduce false end-of-life warnings.
  • The next version, Cobia, aims to improve security by reducing the number of built-in services and making them available as apps. These apps, which run as Kubernetes pods, have limited access to the host system, improving security.
  • Services that are discontinued in favour of apps, such as Rsync Host, OpenVPN and Minio, now generate warnings in Bluefin. Users should migrate to the replacement apps and disable the internal services to facilitate updates to Cobia.
  • A fourth (and likely final) update for Bluefin is being planned, with an expected release in September. This will focus mainly on bug fixes and CVEs, after which the focus will be on Cobia.

* Asigra is an enterprise-level backup and recovery software. It enables data to be backed up across multiple physical and virtual environments, including desktops, laptops, servers, databases and even cloud services. The Asigra plugin in TrueNAS allows users to access the powerful features of this software directly on their TrueNAS system.

Iconik is a cloud-based media management platform. It is mainly used in media and entertainment industries to organise, search and share media content. The Iconik plugin in TrueNAS allows this platform to be integrated directly into a TrueNAS system, enabling easier and more seamless management of media content.
