Flexible in copper or fibre
Using Fibre Channel in the corporate SAN
Purpose-built for SANs: Fibre Channel
Need to move gigabytes of data at full-duplex speeds over long distances? A Fibre Channel architecture handles it with ease.
Fibre Channel transports data at 4, 8, 16, and 32 Gbit/s with low command overhead—meaning a high payload rate—while operating in full duplex. Inside a facility, both copper and fiber cables are common. Beyond 30 meters, however, only optical fiber is used, supporting links up to 100 kilometers.
This block-based protocol supports three topologies: Point-to-Point, Arbitrated Loop, and Switched Fabric. In Point-to-Point, each storage device connects directly to a server. An Arbitrated Loop chains up to 126 FC clients in a ring, though only two devices can communicate at any given moment.
Fibre Channel in Action
The greatest flexibility comes from a switched-fabric design, where cascaded hubs and switches network countless components. Within this system, every participant can be logically connected to every other.
To integrate Fibre Channel into your infrastructure, you’ll need specialized PCIe host-bus adapters, switches, and cables—all of which we can supply.
