SDS — definition and capabilities

Software-defined storage (SDS) delivers and manages data repositories irrespective of the underlying hardware platform. By cleanly separating the physical storage layer from the software that administers it, SDS enables a full suite of data-services—including deduplication, replication, thin provisioning, snapshots, and backup—without locking you to a specific vendor.
SDS can be deployed through an appliance in a Storage Area Network (SAN), exposed as Network-Attached Storage (NAS), or implemented as object-based storage, depending on the performance profile and protocol your workload demands.
