In Good Company: TrueNAS/FreeNAS & Archiware P5

Open-source storage servers paired with a powerful data-management suite

TrueNAS/FreeNAS and Archiware P5—cleverly combined

We deliver an all-in-one option with LTO, powered by the mature backup architecture of Archiware P5, giving you flexible protection on disk, tape, or in the cloud.

Our engineering team has developed cost-effective network-storage appliances based on TrueNAS/FreeNAS that mesh perfectly with Archiware P5’s data-management suite.

These price-friendly systems double as backup servers: you can connect RDX drives, full LTO tape libraries, or a cloud tier to safeguard your valuable corporate data.

Because TrueNAS/FreeNAS already offers outstanding data protection—thanks to the brilliant ZFS file system and snapshot features—our installations become true storage bastions.

Additional plug-ins make them even more modular: third-party add-ons enable media streaming, alternate protocols, or various web applications.

The hardware foundation is rock-solid Supermicro rack-mount servers, custom-built to each customer’s needs and assembled on site in Kirchheim unter Teck. Drive count, media mix, and host interfaces are all up to you.

You get the best of every world:

  • Seamless OS integration with Archiware P5
  • Platform independence through a wide protocol palette
  • Brilliant OpenZFS with RAID-Z2 for dual-drive protection
  • Virtualization ready—spin up a VM on the NAS in minutes

Industrial-grade hardware, a modular open-source OS, a professional data-management suite, and comprehensive after-sales support—wrapped into a single solution.

Backup and restore: TrueNAS backup in detail

This enterprise-level solution packs a punch: bundled with Archiware P5, our FreeNAS appliances back up to external disks, durable LTO tapes, or straight to the cloud.

The P5 plug-in runs in the background on the FreeNAS server and offers features such as data-type filtering, incremental backups, and cloning.

For LTO users, Archiware includes LTFS support so tapes can be read without P5. That means you can hand off large datasets on LTO media with no extra software. Naturally, LTFS cartridges can also be read and imported by Archiware P5.

Long-term archiving is handled by P5 Archive directly on the TrueNAS/FreeNAS system. Flexible metadata fields, media previews, and proxy clips are perfect for media-heavy archives.

The companion P5 Companion App—running on any Windows, macOS, or Linux workstation—lets you archive and restore via simple drag-and-drop. It couldn’t be easier.

FAQ - Storage

Here you will find the most important questions about our storage solutions.

Why is a local (“on-premise”) storage system so important despite the cloud?

For highly critical or latency-sensitive workloads in particular, outsourcing to the cloud alone is often not enough. A local system provides the necessary speed and control: the data remains in your company, which enables fast, synchronous processing and a high standard of security. For example, you can run time-critical applications smoothly and at the same time benefit from the advantages of the cloud for backup or archiving.

Which storage systems are suitable for my company?

We offer solutions from small SMEs to large enterprise operations. Whether you need a compact RAID system for a few terabytes, a high-availability NAS for multiple locations or a JBOD to expand capacity with hundreds of drives, our experts can help you make the right choice and offer a wide range of form factors, protocols and equipment variants.

How does Starline ensure reliable data security?

Our storage systems are state of the art. The stored data is then protected in various ways: this can be RAID technologies, modern file systems such as ZFS, erasure coding, replication, snapshots and/or encryption options. Our industrial grade hardware is assembled in Kirchheim and tested in a burn-in test. This is how we guarantee a long service life for your storage systems.

Can JBODs be added to my existing storage setup?

Absolutely. Many of our systems have a modular design so that you can easily add more drives via JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) expansions. This allows you to flexibly adapt the capacity to growing data volumes at any time without having to purchase a completely new solution.

How does Starline provide support during and after installation?

We support you throughout the entire life cycle of your storage system - from the initial consultation to installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance. Our technicians are always available on weekdays; we also offer a 24x7x4 service on request. We also support you with customs and financing issues and take care of firmware updates and any special requests.
