Western Digital's Ultrastar DC HC550 family of enterprise hard drives, with their high capacity, provide a significant reduction in TCO in terms of space per TB and power per TB. Their helium filling helps them anyway for a reduced power consumption and moreover for a high reliability, which again benefits the maintenance costs. The 24/7 models integrate a whole range of technologies on a 9-disk array. For example, the 18TB SATA HDDs are the first in the industry to use EAMR (Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology. This improves writeability and thus increases areal density. Furthermore, for the first time, they have incorporated a three-stage actuator (TSA) that improves the accuracy of head positioning, which also increases density but also optimizes performance.
