Who or what is Proxmox?

In common parlance, “Proxmox” is often used as a synonym for the product Proxmox VE. However, it actually refers to Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH. The company was founded in 2005 by Martin and Dietmar Maurer in Vienna. The company’s goal was, and remains, the development of GNU/Linux software for secure IT environments.

And that’s exactly what happened shortly thereafter: The first product was Proxmox Mail Gateway. By 2008, they had already launched the first stable version of Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE). This was followed by Proxmox Backup Server (2020) and Proxmox Datacenter Manager (2024).

Which Proxmox product do I need?

The four Proxmox products complement each other to form a cohesive open-source data center stack, but can largely be used independently of one another.

Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) forms the basis for virtualization, while Proxmox Backup Server and Proxmox Datacenter Manager are primarily designed as supplements to it—although Proxmox Backup Server also works standalone for third-party environments.

The Proxmox Mail Gateway stands as a completely standalone product alongside the others and requires no connection to the rest of the Proxmox ecosystem.
