SAS vs. SATA — what sets them apart?

No place on the home desktop
Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is virtually absent from consumer systems because mainstream motherboards expose only SATA ports. Running SAS HDDs therefore requires a dedicated SAS controller—an expense few home users can justify. Professionals, on the other hand, gain a key advantage: SAS controllers can “tunnel” the SATA protocol, so SATA drives attach and operate seamlessly on a SAS backplane.

Performance—and resilience—built for the data center
Beyond that backward compatibility, SAS remains popular in enterprise storage for its speed: 12 Gbit/s per port versus 6 Gbit/s for SATA. Dual-port drives can double aggregate throughput to 24 Gbit/s or present parallel 12 Gbit/s links to two host adapters, delivering both bandwidth and path redundancy.

Scale and form-factor flexibility
Because SAS is a serial point-to-point architecture, an expander lets you fan out far more devices than the controller’s native port count. Drives in either SFF (2.5-inch) or LFF (3.5-inch) formats fit standard server, NAS, and RAID enclosures, and both sizes can be mixed to extend capacity—SFF units even mount in LFF bays with the proper carriers.

In short, SAS offers the performance headroom, scalability, and interoperability that mission-critical storage demands—capabilities SATA alone can’t match.
