LTO-9 and LTO-8 tapes for high-capacity storage
Offline security for critical data
LTO-9: the latest generation for tape backups
As extremely durable backup media, magnetic tapes safeguard your valuable data for decades.
LTO magnetic tapes remain an exceptionally cost-effective way to store massive data volumes—even in the age of NAND flash. They efficiently archive data from the Internet of Things (IoT) and other ICT workloads, and they readily accommodate the surge in big-data sets produced by artificial intelligence (AI).
Global data creation is still rising exponentially, and that trend will continue as digital transformation accelerates and high-resolution 4K/8K video becomes standard.
The 20-year-old LTO standard keeps pace because every two to three years a new generation doubles tape capacity. Today’s eighth generation holds up to 15 TB of compressed data, while robust LTO-9 cartridges store up to 45 TB of uncompressed material such as text or spreadsheets. The upcoming LTO-10 standard is already defined and will support 90 TB.
LTO’s success also stems from its removable cartridges, which create a crucial air gap—the last line of defense against disasters like flooding, fire, or lightning. Even continuous data protection (CDP) can’t match that: malware cannot contaminate data locked away offline in a steel vault.
LTO-9: Engineered for decades, built for professionals
The ever-increasing recording density of LTO technology owes much to innovations such as Fujifilm’s barium-ferrite (BaFe) particles and NANOCUBIC coating, introduced with LTO-8. These advances not only doubled capacity but also raised native throughput to 750 MB/s.
The cartridges themselves add further refinements. Each LTO Ultrium cartridge contains an EEPROM and an RFID tag for instant identification, while WORM media (Write Once, Read Many) use on-board firmware to prevent overwriting or alteration—guaranteeing data permanence. From LTO-4 onward, all tapes also support 256-bit AES encryption.
Navigation on high-capacity media became easier with Linear Tape File System (LTFS), launched in Generation 5. Backup applications such as Archiware P5 can therefore address files directly: the software instructs the drive to seek to the exact position on the tape.
Long-term security with LTO-9
The LTO roadmap mandates not only regular capacity jumps but also backward compatibility—write/read to the previous generation and read two generations back—so your data remains accessible for decades. We still supply earlier media from LTO-4 through LTO-8.
Whether you add the LTO option to a server or a storage array, we can furnish internal and external single drives or fully automated systems—autoloaders and libraries. Maintenance is covered too: we stock the appropriate LTO cleaning cartridge for every drive.

Here you’ll find answers to questions about our backup systems. Need more details or prefer a one-on-one consultation? We’re happy to help.
Your company’s knowledge—stored in gigabytes or terabytes—is among its most valuable assets. Our backup solutions secure that data reliably with differential, incremental, and full backups, so you no longer have to worry about lost information or downtime. Explore our full range of backup offerings here.
Our portfolio spans everything from compact single-tape drives to highly scalable tape libraries and powerful backup servers. We also help you choose the right strategy—hot backup, cold backup, or cloud integration—based on your specific requirements.
We analyze your infrastructure, define the protection scope together, and design a solution that meets key criteria: performance, reliability, data volume, recovery time, and budget. The result is a custom system that fits seamlessly into your workflows.
Tape systems such as LTO autoloaders and tape libraries deliver high capacity at low operating cost, and their offline capability makes them largely immune to malware or ransomware. Disk-based solutions offer faster access and easy scalability. A hybrid approach often provides the best balance of security and flexibility.
From planning and deployment to day-to-day operation, our team has you covered. We can handle maintenance and updates or offer service contracts with guaranteed response times—including 24 × 7 × 4 support—to ensure you get help fast whenever it’s needed.
