Direct Attached Storage (DAS)—sometimes called Server Attached Storage—refers to storage that connects directly to the computer via a point-to-point link. A common consumer example is an external USB hard drive.
Professionals, however, use other interfaces and protocols to add capacity quickly. Administrators rely on USB 3.2, Thunderbolt 3, SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), eSATA, or proprietary HBA connections.

Areca's ARC-8042-12 provides large capacities in a small footprint as a SAS-to-SAS desktop RAID subsystem. Up to 12 Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) drives at 12 Gbps or 12 Serial ATA (SATA) drives at 6.0 Gbps can be accommodated in this external storage enclosure. The high-performance dual-core ROC processor, 2GB RAM memory architecture and 12 Gbit/s SAS technology ensure high performance in the workflow.

Daisy-chaining allows up to six devices to be connected, so the ARC-8050T3 rackmount requires only one Thunderbolt port to the host computer.
