New NVMe server with GRAID SupremeRAID™ controller and Ultrastar SSD from Western Digital®

NVMe makes it possible:
23 gigabytes per second

We would like to introduce you to an outstanding storage composition. It consists of a 1U chassis from Supermicro, an AMD CPU, plenty of RAM, a new RAID card – accelerated via GPU – and ten fast Enterprise SSDs. In this combination, the server offers 80 terabytes of raw capacity with incredible performance.

  • Unbridled NVMe performance
  • Reduced cabling effort
  • High IOPS rates
  • Saves CPU resources

Slim server with exorbitant performance

SSDs from Western Digital® with GRAID

Through this new technology – GRAID SupremeRAID and Ultrastar® SSDs from Western Digital® – this server not only gets a good boost, but the administrator can also reserve his CPU completely for his applications. If the tasks are simple, the user can save a lot of money by choosing a cheaper processor.

The NVMe SSDs are simply inserted into the NVMe chassis. Internal cabling to the RAID controller is therefore not necessary. All drives communicate directly with the system via the PCIe bus.

GPU booster for all RAID calculations

GRAID SupremeRAID™, as an NVMe RAID card, provides the maximum available SSD performance for your data center. This enables record-breaking NVMe SSD or NVMeoF performance via RAID without compromising data security or business continuity.

This breakthrough solution finally eliminates the traditional performance bottleneck of conventional RAID cards when paired with NVMe SSDs. It is also the world’s first NVMeoF RAID solution: It therefore protects not only directly connected SSDs, but also those connected to the server via a JBOF (NVMe over Fabrics).

JBODs Western Digital® NVMe SSDs and JBODs in the Data Center

NVMe SSDs handle the really urgent tasks

Designed for high traffic volumes

Ultrastar SSDs from Western Digital’s Ultrastar families DC SN840 and DC SN640® have proven to be the ideal storage partners for the GRAID card in internal tests. Thus, the data center SSDs excel in high-performance computing (HPC) as well as fast-available capacities in an HA storage array and also in mixed workloads.

The 96-layer 3D NANDs in combination with the powerful NVMe 1.3 controllers of Western Digital® NVMe 1.3 controllers deliver up to 6x the read performance of standard SATA SSDs: up to 3,470 MB/s with an incredible 780,000 IOPS.

RAID controller with fast NVMe™ SSDs offloads the CPU

CPU resource-saving RAID performance

GRAID SupremeRAID™ handles all IO processing and the necessary RAID calculations within the system. Thus, the CPU can completely devote itself to its primary task. Advantage: Productivity increases and costs are reduced.

The selection of the RAID modes is easily done via command line. Thanks to the NVIDIA GPU, these operations are performed within seconds.

High-capacity HDD drives in addition?

Western Digital 20TB

SATA HDDs for large storage tasks

Long runners from Western Digital®

Enterprise HDDs with SATA interface from Western Digital® provide a significant reduction in TCO: In terms of storage space per TB and energy consumption per TB, Western Digital HDDs consistently achieve top positions in the comparison.

In addition, their low power consumption and high reliability saves for lower costs and reduced maintenance. Starline customers benefit from the 24/7 models that we always offer for data center tasks, as they provide the highest capacities with currently 20 TB.

In 2018, Bernd Widmaier celebrated his 25th anniversary with Starline. With great experience and broad knowledge – combined with high customer orientation – he heads our sales team. However, he also contributes plenty to sales himself and frequently represents Starline externally at events. The VFB fan has an excellent knowledge of various vertical markets, such as Mac, video storage and media streaming, which earns him the exhibition booth support at the IBC in Amsterdam every year.
